To take a handling and driving test, you need to bring your own vehicle. Ajovarma does not provide you with a vehicle for the examination. If you would like to hire a vehicle, you can contact driving schools, for example. The vehicle used in the driving examination must be roadworthy. No significant defects are allowed. If the vehicle is found to have signicant defects, the driving test cannot be taken. Vehicles used in examinations must meet the requirements set in the Driving Licence Directive, the Driving Licence Act (386/2011) and the Government Decree on Driving Licences (423/2011). The requirements concern vehicles and their equipment.
The vehicle must be:

for category AM/120, a two-wheel moped
for category AM/121, a light quadricycle (microcar / light quadri-mobile or quad bike) or a quad tractor registered in category T3b
for category A1, a two-wheel motorcycle without sidecar
- with a power rating not exceeding 11 kW and with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg
- with a design speed of at least 90 km/h
- with a cylinder capacity of at least 115 cm3 in the case of an internal combustion engine or a power to weight ratio of at least 0.08 kW/kg in the case of an electric motor

for category A2, a two-wheel motorcycle without sidecar
- with a power rating of at least 20 kW but not exceeding 35 kW and with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0,2 kW/kg and not derived from a vehicle of more than double its power
- with a cylinder capacity of at least 245 cm3 in the case of an internal combustion engine or a power to weight ratio of at least 0.15 kW/kg in the case of an electric motor
for category A, a two-wheel motorcycle without sidecar
- whose unladen mass is more than 175 kg
- with a power rating of at least 50 kW
- with a cylinder capacity of at least 595 cm3 in the case of an internal combustion engine or a power to weight ratio of at least 0.25 kW/kg in the case of an electric motor
for category B, a passenger car, van or motor caravan with a maximum total mass of 3,500 kg
- with a maximum design speed of at least 100 km/h
for category C1, a lorry
- with a registered total mass of at least 4,000 kg but not exceeding 7,500 kg
- with a length of at least 5 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- fitted with anti-lock brakes
- fitted with a tachograph
- with a cargo compartment or cargo consisting of a closed box body which is at least as wide and high as the cab over its entire length
for category C, a lorry
- with a registered total mass of at least 12,000 kg and a minimum of 10,000 kg of real total mass
- with a length of at least 8 m
- with a width of at least 2.40 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- fitted with anti-lock brakes
- equipped with a transmission system providing for a manual selection of gears by the driver
- fitted with a tachograph
- with a cargo compartment or cargo consisting of a closed box body which is at least as wide and high as the cab over its entire length
for category D1, a bus or a coach
- with a registered total mass of at least 4,000 kg
- with a length of at least 5 m but not exceeding 8 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- fitted with anti-lock brakes
- fitted with a tachograph
- with capacity to carry no more than 16 passengers
for category D, a bus or a coach
- with a registered total mass of at least 10,000 kg
- with a length of at least 10 m
- with a width of at least 2.40 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- fitted with anti-lock brakes
- fitted with a tachograph
- with capacity to carry at least 17 passengers
for category B/96, a combination made up of a passenger car, van or motor caravan and a trailer
- with the tractor vehicle’s and trailer’s combined total mass exceeding 3,500 kg but not exceeding 4,250 kg
- with a trailer having a total mass exceeding 750 kg
for category BE, a combination made up of a passenger car, van or motor caravan and a trailer:
- with a combined registered total mass exceeding 3,500 kg
- with a maximum design speed of at least 100 km/h
- with a trailer having a total mass of at least 1,000 kg and a minimum of 800 kg of real total mass
- with a cargo compartment or cargo consisting of a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the cab or slightly less wide than the cab provided that the view to the rear is only possible by use of the external rear-view mirrors of the motor vehicle
for category C1E, a combination made up of a lorry with a total mass not exceeding 7,500 kg and a trailer
- with a length of at least 8 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- with a trailer having a registered total mass of at least 1,250 kg and a minimum of 800 kg of real total mass
- with a cargo compartment or cargo consisting of a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the cab or slightly less wide than the cab provided that the view to the rear is only possible by use of the external rear-view mirrors of the motor vehicle
for category CE, a combination made up of a lorry with a total mass exceeding 7,500 kg and a trailer
- with a registered total mass of at least 20,000 kg and a minimum of 15,000 kg of real total mass
- with a length of at least 14 m
- with a width of at least 2.4 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- with a trailer of at least 7.5 m in length
- fitted with anti-lock brakes
- equipped with a transmission system providing for a manual selection of gears by the driver
- fitted with a tachograph
- with a cargo compartment or cargo which is at least as wide and as high as the cab of the tractor vehicle
for category D1E, a combination made up of a bus or a coach with capacity to carry no more than 16 passengers and a trailer
- with a trailer having a maximum registered total mass of at least 1,250 kg and a minimum of 800 kg of real total mass
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- with a cargo compartment body or cargo compartment which is at least 2 m wide and 2 m high
for category DE, a combination made up of a bus or a coach with capacity to carry no more than 17 passengers and a trailer
- with a trailer having a maximum registered total mass of at least 1,250 kg and a minimum of 800 kg of real total mass
- with a width of at least 2.40 m
- with a maximum design speed of at least 80 km/h
- with a cargo compartment body or cargo compartment which is at least 2 m wide and 2 m high.

A three-wheel vehicle may be used instead of a two-wheel vehicle if the student has a medical certificate stating that his or her impairment, illness or disability requires it. In such a case, the driving right will be subject to a condition on driving a three-wheel vehicle.

The total mass requirement concerning examination vehicles in category C1 and the requirement of a tachograph do not apply if the applicant is, because of an illness or disability, only able to drive a vehicle equipped with special controls and this equipment gives the vehicle a total mass that causes it to be classified as a lorry.

The applicant must prove this with a medical certificate and a driving test, if applicable. The right to drive must be restricted to non-commercial transports with the vehicle in question or such a category E combination.

Other equipment requirements for vehicles used in examinations

The following vehicles must be equipped with a pedal affecting the service brake, as referred to in section 40, subsection 1 of the Driving Licence Act (386/2011):

vehicles used in an examination for a right to drive in categories B, C1 and C and in vehicles with side-by-side seats that are used in an examination for a right to drive in category AM/121. The vehicles must also have a separate external rear-view mirror.
motorcycles and those light quadricycles and tractors that have seats in tandem if the driving instructor or other person instructing driving practice is seated in the vehicle. The brake pedal must affect all wheels.
buses or coaches if the student does not have a right to drive a lorry in category C.

No separate brake pedal is required for the tractor vehicle of a category E combination.

The vehicle may be equipped with special controls that make driving easier if the applicant has an impairment, illness or disability that requires such controls. In driving instruction and practice under a driving instruction permit, a vehicle equipped with special controls for the permit holder’s use may be used if the equipment does not prevent the applicant from using the vehicle’s other control devices.

A vehicle used for driving instruction and practice must display a white triangle symbol. The symbol must be equilateral with the length of each side being at least 16 cm but no more than 25 cm.

The symbol must be affixed to the back of the vehicle in a place that is clearly visible. In driving instruction and practice with a motorcycle, moped or a light quadricycle or tractor with seats in tandem, the symbol can be placed on the applicant’s back, in a clearly visible manner, instead of the vehicle.

If the driving instructor or other person instructing driving practice is seated in the vehicle, the symbol must be placed on his or her back if it is not affixed to the vehicle.

In driving instruction provided under a driving school licence, the driving school’s name must also be clearly displayed on the vehicle in addition to the triangle symbol.
